Police seeking axe-wielding robber

Police are looking to CCTV footage to identify a man who robbed a Porirua dairy with a tomahawk.

The man demanded cash and cigarettes at the Daji Foodmarket Dairy in Titahi Bay, about 4.30pm on March 11, Detective Sergeant Shane Rongonui said.

"He was brandishing a tomahawk-type axe approximately 30cm long."

The female dairy owner was shaken but unharmed, Mr Rongonui said.

Police today released CCTV footage of the man in an effort to identify him.

He is described as a 1.78m tall Maori or Polynesian, 17 or 18 years old, of athletic build.

He was wearing a short-sleeved white and red checked shirt over a red sweatshirt, with a white T-shirt covering his hair and a red T-shirt around his mouth and nose.

Mr Rongonui said he hoped someone would recognise the man and get in touch with police as soon as possible.
