Police are searching for witnesses who saw a group of teenagers attack a young girl in Waikato last Monday.

The incident occurred in the Putaruru area, south of Tirau, on July 13 between 5pm and 6pm.

The group of about eight teenagers first yelled out to the girl on Kensington St, police said.

She feared for her safety and changed her walking direction before again encountering the same group on Terrace St.

The group, predominantly dressed in red, surrounded her and began to assault her until the girl managed to break away and run to safety.

Detective Constable John Goddard said it was a lucky escape.

The girl had been medically assessed and was now recovering at home, he said.

"The young female was extremely vulnerable and was targeted by a group of teenagers and was very lucky to escape without serious injury," he said.

"We are appealing for the public's help in identifying anyone that may be able to assist us."

Police are looking to talk to anyone who may have seen the group of teens or the young girl that night.

She was wearing a black puffer jacket, black leggings and a grey and white top.
