Police responding to incident in Coromandel

A domestic incident possibly involving a firearm sparked a police call- out at Kennedy Bay in northeastern Coromandel this afternoon.

A police statement says a firearm may have been involved in the incident.

"Police have spoken to the residents of the address and have accounted for all occupants and neighbours, who are safe and well," the statement says.

"There is no further information available at this time."

Shortly before 2pm, police spokesman Inspector Peter Raynes said there was no threat to people or property.

A Thames resident told the Herald he saw about 10 police cars and an ambulance heading north out of the town early this afternoon.

Today's incident comes about a month after another scare at Kennedy Bay, when armed officers swooped on the usually quiet holiday destination after reports at least two men with shotguns were chasing another person.

The local Harataunga Marae was filled with children and was forced into lockdown when shots were heard.

Two people were arrested but no firearms were recovered from the scene and there were no injuries.

One woman who drove past the men with shotguns spoke about the terrifying encounter.

"It wasn't until I got through it that I realised they were frothing at the mouth, it looked like they were going to shoot someone," said Marianna Schultz last month.
