Kamo Intermediate School Principal Rob Soar said a number of systems had been put in place to provide support for teachers and students.
"We have had a meeting of the teachers who have talked to the children," he said.
"We have also had support from the Ministry of Education's dramatic incidents team to work with staff mainly but with children as well."
The newsletter contained details of the incident and the schools condolences.
"It is with great sadness that I write to you today about a tragic event that happened at our school yesterday.
After school yesterday a 14-month-old child was involved in an accident on school property and died as a result.
"The appropriate agencies are involved and providing a range of support to staff and students. Teachers will be monitoring their student closely so they can quickly identify any needing further support," it read.
None of the schools students witnessed the incident. There were however, a couple of teachers who did, Mr Soar said.
The matter is under investigation by police.
