Police recover man's body from sea after cliff fall

Police have recovered the body of a man who fell from a cliff into the sea off Wai-iti Beach in north Taranaki today.

The man fell about 15 metres off a ledge into the sea and police were called about 11.16am, Inspector Ken Climo, of police central communications, said.

Mr Climo said it was not known at this stage how old the man was.

Rescuers attempted to get to the man by climbing down the cliff and by boat, and his body was eventually recovered by police in a boat at 12.45pm.

It was not known whether the man had died as a result of the fall or had drowned.
