A police officer suffered a suspected broken nose and concussion after being punched during an arrest in Hamilton this morning.
Police were called to a suspected trespass at a property in the city about 5am and were in the process of arresting a 28-year-old man when he allegedly lashed out, striking the officer in the head.
"Additional staff arrived and the offender was taken into custody.
"The officer was taken to Waikato Hospital for treatment of what appears to be a broken nose and possible concussion,'' Senior Sergeant Mike Underwood said.
The suspect will appear in Hamilton District Court today charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
"Police obviously take such incidents very seriously and people involved in such behaviour can expect a robust response from police and the judiciary,'' Mr Underwood said.
"Although assaults while going to the aid of other persons could be considered part of a policeman's lot that does not make them acceptable and we need to ensure people understand they will not be tolerated.''
