A police officer has been charged with corruption for allegedly seeking sexual favours in exchange for dropping a driving offence.
Police said the officer was suspended from duty in February and appeared in court today over the charge.
It was alleged he had sought a bribe of sexual favours in return for not proceeding with a prosecution for a driving offence, police said.
He was granted conditional bail, but remains suspended from duty, and will re-appear in Wanganui District Court on July 19.
District Commander Russell Gibson said he was confident the alleged offence did not involve any other officers.
"As soon as the allegation came to light, the officer was stood down and a criminal investigation was launched. I am confident that as a result of that investigation this is isolated to the officer involved and does not involve any other officers.
