Police have named a man who was shot dead at a house north of Auckland last night.
He was Gene Patrick Atkins, a 28-year-old concrete layer from Orewa.
A 30-year-old painter who lived at the house where the shooting took place was arrested soon after the incident andtoday appeared in North Shore District Court.
He entered no plea to a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody until January 23.
Police said M r Atkins had been shot shortly before 11pm following a dispute with the accused.
Forensic staff remained at the address in Redvale, Rodney, today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby from the North Shore police said it could be a few days before police decided whether to lay further, more serious charges.
