Police have released the name of the man who died in a work accident at a goldmine in Southland last night.

He was Mario Lelina, 30, from the Philippines.

Worksafe NZ would continue an ongoing investigation into the incident, police said.

Emergency services were called to the site on Riversdale-Waikaia Rd in Waikaia about 6.20pm yesterday.

It was reported a man had been involved in an accident while operating machinery at a goldmine.

He suffered critical injuries as a result and later died.

Police said the man's next of kin have been told of his death.
