Police make arrest after attempted burglary of Dunedin homes

Police have nabbed a man accused of several attempted burglaries, including one in which he allegedly entered a Dunedin home as the occupants slept.

A man sneaked into the Grange St home where two people were asleep about 5am on Thursday last week, police said.

"The man did not take anything but this has understandably been very frightening for the residents of the house," a police spokesman said.

The next night, about 10.30pm, a man tried to break into several houses on Hyde St. On one occasion, a person spotted him and scared him away.

"While the man did not enter any houses, he was seen looking into windows and unlawfully on people's property.

"The same night, a male has been seen loitering in the same area and police thought this appeared suspicious."

Police spoke to the man and took a detailed description of him.

Their following inquiries, which included reviewing CCTV footage in the area, confirmed he was the same man accused of the break-in attempts.

They arrested him yesterday.

The 31-year-old is due to appear in court on Friday on charges of burglary and unlawfully being in an enclosed yard.

Police believe this man may be responsible for similar incidents in the area and ask that anyone who has witnessed anything suspicious to come forward .
