Police have launched a homicide inquiry after a woman's body was found in Whanganui this week.

The body was found about 11.20am on Thursday on Lee St by police officers making inquiries relating to a missing person investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison said.

A scene examination was under way, Harrison said.

Police expected to give an update later next week as the investigation progressed, he said.
