Police investigating after house destroyed by fire in Nelson region overnight

A home burned to the ground overnight near Motueka in a suspected arson attack.

Firefighters were called to Umukuri Rd north of Motueka just after 2.30am to find the one-storey house engulfed by flames.

Nine crews battled the blaze but the house was destroyed.

Everyone inside managed to get out uninjured, said a Fire and Emergency spokesperson.

The blaze was being treated as suspicious, he said.

Fire investigators and police were due to scour the razed home this morning to find out what caused the blaze.

Seven crews remain at the scene dampening down hot spots.
