Police investigate death of 5-week-old baby

Police are investigating the death of a five-week-old baby who had suffered brain injuries.

The baby was transferred to Auckland Starship Hospital from Taupo Hospital last Thursday and died on Saturday morning, Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner of Taupo police said.

Police were attempting to establish the cause of death, he said.

A post mortem examination at Auckland had not yet been completed.

"Family members are assisting the police to establish the cause of the injuries."

The name of the baby would not be released until all family members have been told.
