Invercargill police are investigating how a baby girl received critical head and chest injuries.
Emergency services were called to the seven-month-old's Bay Road home late on Tuesday night, the Southland Times reported.
They were working with her family members and were not looking for anyone else in relation to the
matter, police said.
Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy, of Invercargill CIB, would not comment on the likelihood of charges.
It was understood the baby was admitted to Southland Hospital having seizures and was found to have a brain bleed and broken ribs.
She was flown to Auckland yesterday afternoon and was in a critical condition in Starship's paediatric intensive care unit.
