Police hunting a Hamilton East rapist are sending samples collected by a doctor for forensic tests - and warning local women not to go out alone.
The rape of a 19-year-old woman at 3.30 am on Friday was the latest in a spate of sex attacks in the suburb,
some of which may have been committed by the same person.
Friday's victim was making a call from a phone box near Te Aroha St and Grey St when she was grabbed, dragged down a flight of steps and raped. The attacker was described as in his early 20s and about 179cm tall.
Detective Sergeant Dave Grace yesterday warned women not to go out alone, and especially not to walk alone at night.
"We're not saying there is a serial offender, but there are similarities in description over many offences." There have been up to 10 sexual incidents reported in Hamilton East since December. The worst were at Nixon St on April 8 and at Bridge St on May 6.
Each time, women were held down and sexually attacked, although there were differences in the type of assault.
Friday's victim was said to be shocked, but coping with her ordeal. Clothing and samples collected by a doctor would be examined by forensics experts, but results could take six weeks.
Detective Sergeant Grace said no weapon was used in the attacks.
