Police at Auckland Domain: Items thought to be human remains actually a rat

A police operation at Auckland Domain has ended after items discovered near the park were initially thought to be human remains – but have now been confirmed to have been a rodent.

A police spokeswoman told the Herald: “There was some concern they were human remains, but it’s actually a rat.”

Police earlier confirmed that cordons had been put up around the city park after a number of items were found.

Exactly what those items were, however, was not revealed.

“Police are in attendance on Domain [Drive] after items were located near the Domain earlier this morning.

“Cordons are in place while staff work in the area,” a police statement said.

“There is not believed to be any risk to the public.”

A member of the public reported seeing “crime scene tape” around the main entrance of the park near Auckland City Hospital.

They also reported seeing officers in boiler suits.
