The Herald understands people ran into the water to help the man after hearing cries for help.
He was brought back to the beach with the assistance of a paddleboarder.
After the man was pulled from the water, beachgoers formed a privacy screen around the scene using beach towels and sarongs as emergency responders attempted CPR.
Just after noon, four firefighters were seen carrying a body covered in a sheet up the beach on a stretcher and into a waiting ambulance.
A man who helped at the scene said paramedics tried to revive the man for 25 minutes.
A woman, believed to be the man’s wife, was being comforted by others on the beach.
