Police charge 46-year-old man after manhunt in Dunedin

Police have charged a 46-year-old after a manhunt through Dunedin yesterday.

Officers arrested the “high-risk offender” last night after he had been sought for a series of incidents across the Otago coastal area.

Southern District Commander Superintendent Jason Guthrie said the man was arrested in Fraser’s Gully after earlier attempts to avoid police.

“The man faces charges of assaulting police, failing to stop for police, driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, and driving while disqualified, third and subsequent,” Guthrie said.

He is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow.

“An investigation into the events of Wednesday evening remains ongoing,” Guthrie said.

Officers located the 46-year-old man at a petrol station on Kaikorai Valley Rd and attempted to take him into custody.

However, the man drove his vehicle towards the patrol car and officers in an effort to avoid arrest.

Police fired a shot, but no one was injured.

The man then fled the area in the vehicle, which was later located in Brockville.

Road spikes were successfully deployed and the man then escaped on foot into the bush.

He was eventually apprehended by a police dog team in the Fraser’s Gully area.
