Fears continue for the health of former broadcaster Tony Veitch, as it is revealed his trial on assault charges is still at least two years away.
Veitch's wife Zoe called police to help search for her husband while the couple were on a Christmas and New Year break.The searchers found Veitch on a nearby beach. Family and friends remain concerned about his health and safety.
In an incident last September, Veitch - who faces seven charges of assaulting Kristin Dunne-Powell - had to be hospitalised after he went missing north of Auckland.
Last night, spokeswoman Glenda Hughes issued a statement, saying the pressure on Veitch had been relentless.
"The dragged-out nature of this particular case and the intense media interest has escalated the pressure Tony has had to deal with. It is always difficult when you are operating in a vacuum and are unable to defend yourself publicly. The pressure he has been under has been relentless and anyone who has to deal with these trying circumstances is likely to struggle. Those close to Tony have ongoing concerns for his wellbeing and continue to support him during this difficult time."
In November it was reported Veitch's trial might not happen until the end of next year. The Herald on Sunday understands it might even be as late as 2011.
The delays have infuriated Veitch's legal and support team and hindered his ability to find work - considered a major step in his recovery.
