Cornish said it was crucial that motorists slow down around schools, noting even slight increases in speed dramatically impacted how quickly a driver could stop.
This “can mean the difference between life and death for pedestrians”.
He said everyone was responsible for improving road safety around the country.
“While police and our road safety partners are all working hard to improve road safety, it is essential that road users maintain a high level of attention to keep everyone safe on the roads.
“Driving at lower speeds around schools when kids are coming and going is part of that and essential in keeping our children safe.”
He said police would continue to monitor the roads, warning that officers would be out in force any time, anywhere.
