Pohutu blows record

Rotorua's Pohutu geyser has now more than trebled its record after erupting non-stop for 123 days.

The previous record was set on March 28, 1936, when New Zealand's biggest geyser, at Whakarewarewa, erupted for 40 consecutive days.

Maori Arts and Crafts Institute acting chief executive Allison Lawton said tourists were relishing the continuing treat, which in the past could be seen about only once an hour.

"Now that it's non-stop, it is pretty special. On the guided tours we are sure to tell the tourists about it."
