She is not known for her love of gambling but Prime Minister Helen Clark couldn't resist a flutter yesterday - and came away from the Auckland Cup $66.60 better off.
She was said by a spokeswoman to be "very happy" after picking winner Prize Lady and runner-up Pentanein the main race.
A spokeswoman said Helen Clark had invested $20 over the course of the day and had asked an aide to place her bets.
Helen Clark was not a gambler as such and only bet on horses when she was at the racecourse, the spokeswoman said.
"She doesn't play Lotto or anything. If she's at the racecourse she will do it," she said.
"She meets a lot of owners and trainers and people involved in it and they are always giving her advice."
At the event, there was some confusion among racegoers after Racing Minister Winston Peters and his partner, Jan Trotman, were introduced as Mr and Mrs Peters. A spokesman said last night that it was a mistake for the pair to be introduced in such a manner.
