The demolition of Christchurch's Centennial Pool complex to make way for a new playground is almost underway.
The recreation and sport centre is the last building remaining on the site of the new playground which will be called the Margaret Mahy Family Playground.
The plans were made by The ChristchurchCentral Development Unit.
The director of the Unit, Warwick Isaacs, said the eight week demolition of the building would allow construction of the playground to begin later this year.
He said it would be "one of the most amazing playgrounds in New Zealand".
"It will have a huge range of play areas and equipment," he said. "I know it will quite quickly become a busy, popular place for children of all ages and their families."
Mr Isaacs asked for people to take care when in the area of the demolition in the block bordered by Manchester, Armagh and Madras Streets and Oxford Terrace, as part of the Avon River Precinct and North and East Frames.
