Plane crash scare a false alarm

A light plane seen billowing smoke mid-air near Huntly this afternoon was a "false alarm", emergency services say.

Fire services received a cell phone call from someone who had seen smoke coming from a light plane in the air over Pukekawa, north of Huntly.

Three fire trucks were sent to the scene but nothing was found.

A fire services spokesman said the trucks had been "called off" because the incident was a false alarm.
