Person in hospital after car smashes into power pole in rural Canterbury

One person has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after their car hit a pole in rural Canterbury this morning.

Emergency services were called to Methven Highway, south of Christchurch, at 3.20am.

The road remains closed and diversions are in place, police said.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
