A person has suffered a heart attack at the scene of a fatal car crash at Clarks Beach.

The fatal crash happened on Clarks Beach Road near Pukekohe when a single vehicle rolled about 4.50pm. It was unclear if the dead person was the only occupant of the car, which was crushed in the accident.

A St John spokeswoman confirmed emergency services were initially called to a traffic incident, before having to attend to a further "medical incident" at the same scene.

The fatal crash happened on Clarks Beach Road near Pukekohe when a single vehicle rolled about 4.50pm.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said two fire crews were at the scene and two more were responding.

It was unclear if the dead person was the only occupant of the car, which was crushed in the accident.

Phillips said no other vehicles were involved.

Counties Manukau Police were also at the scene, 20 minutes west of Papakura.

Police said there were no other injuries. The road is currently closed while the Serious Crash Unit investigate the cause of the incident. Diversions are in place.

Also tonight, emergency services are attending a fire on Ponui Island in the Hauraki Gulf.

The fire has broken out in a shearing shed on Ponui Island, south of Waiheke Island.
Phillips said eight firefighters were onboard the Police boat Deodar 3 heading for the island now where one person had suffered smoke inhalation.

Another crew had been scrambled to the scene via helicopter.

It was unclear yet how big the blaze was.
