A person has reportedly handed themselves in to police after a cat was shot through the head with a crossbow bolt.
Moomoo, who belongs to a Wainuiomata family, had surgery at the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital on Tuesday afternoon to remove the bolt.
The 4-year-old cat was found by his owner Donna Ferrari earlier that day. The bolt had gone in above his left eye and emerged behind the ear.
She said she believed a person had handed themselves into police today.
Ms Ferrari said while Moomoo was recovering well, he was yet to be discharged from hospital.
"He's still got fluid coming out of the drain that they've put it, so he won't be allowed home until that stops and until they think he's well enough to travel the two and a half hours."
Staff at the hospital were unsure of when Moomoo would be well enough to go home, and were assessing his condition on a daily basis, Ms Ferrari said.
