Person dies in Northland crash after car rolls

A person has died after a car rolled in Northland this morning, police say.

Emergency services were alerted just after 7am to the single-car crash on State Highway 1, just south of Okaihau, 85km northwest of Whangarei.

They found one person dead.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash, but the road will remain open, a police spokeswoman said.

Police want to speak with anyone in the area around the time of the crash. Anyone who can help should call Kaikohe Police on (09) 405 2960.

Two people also died overnight in incidents involving trains.

One was struck by a train in central Hamilton early this morning.

The other was in a car which crashed into a power pole on the West Coast and was then hit by a train about 3am.
