Person dead after serious crash in Waikato

A woman has died following a crash near Matamata this afternoon.

Police were called to the scene of the two-car crash, near the Tatuanui roundabout on State Highway 27.

The woman, in her 60s, died while being taken to hospital via helicopter.

A second person received moderate injuries.

Police earlier advised motorists to take alternative routes or to delay travel but the road had since been re-opened.

Police asked that anyone who saw a silver Mitsubishi station wagon being driven on State Highway 29 from Tauranga towards Waikato prior to the crash, contact Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
