A person has received serious burns after a house fire in Papakura.

Fire and Emergency was called to the fire on Smiths Ave in the South Auckland suburb at 8.43pm.

A 10m by 8m flat was originally reported to be well involved in fire, and was later said to be completely destroyed.

A St John spokesperson said one person has been take to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition with severe burns.

A fire spokesperson said three appliances attended the fire and were working to double check that it was all extinguished and safe.

A fire investigator had been called to the scene to determine the cause.
