Pedestrian killed in Westport

A 17-year-old boy has been killed after being hit by a car in Westport this morning.

The crash happened when the teenager was walking down Cape Foulwind Rd with a 16-year-old friend at about 6:30am, police said.

Sergeant Steve Baddock said it appeared the teenager had walked into the path of an oncoming car.

"The driver of the car was unable to avoid him and the youth was killed instantly."
Police said the female driver was on her way to work.

She has been taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Mr Baddock said police had launched an investigation into the activities of the two youths before the accident.
