Stewie soothes baby Connar Grant to sleep in this clip from YouTube. At first it appears the last thing baby Connar wants as he cries and wriggles restlessly is for a cat to start playing with his head.
But a YouTube video shows how Stewie the cat stops the tearsand sends his friend to sleep with careful and patient stroking.
Although some may expect the claws to come out at any moment, Stewie sits patiently patting the baby.
The clip, uploaded by the baby's father Aaron Grant, 35, of Canada, ends with the pet staring at the camera, apparently with great pride at what he has done.
The YouTube video was uploaded in September but has gone viral over the past few days after being featured on video-sharing websites. It has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.
