Some parishioners are preparing to leave Wellington's St Andrew's on The Terrace Presbyterian church because they believe a lesbian will become their next minister.
It looks likely the Rev Dr Margaret Mayman, a gay minister due to conduct tomorrow's service, will soon be leading their services.
In a letter to the
St Andrew's congregation on Monday, session clerk Heather Macfarlane confirmed that Christchurch-based Dr Mayman had been invited to preach so the congregation could meet her before they voted on whether she should become their new minister. The vote would be held on November 11.
A parishioner said they were also told last Sunday that Dr Mayman would be accompanied by her partner and her son. The parishioner was now planning to leave St Andrew's.
A fellow worshipper, Alex James, said he would probably change to another church if Dr Mayman were appointed.
"As you see in the Bible it condemns [homosexuality]. If you're a Christian you have to go by the Bible."
