Overnight fire causes rest home evacuation

A Blenheim rest home had to be evacuated overnight after fire broke out in the laundry.
Emergency services were contacted about the fire in Waterlea Retirement Home on McLauchlan St just after midnight.
An ambulance spokeswoman said 20 rest home residents were evacuated from the building.
No one was injured
and they were allowed to go back to bed about 2.45am.
A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters had helped with ventilation of the rest home to clear it of smoke.
