Police have warned people not to approach a near-naked escaped prisoner who avoided them in spectacular fashion yesterday. Werimu Rangi Hauraki was handcuffed by Whakatane police, but while being escorted he dived head-first from a balcony over a steep cliff. Police cornered him at least twice but he evaded them both times. "He is naked, except for some weed matting he is wearing and handcuffed," acting Inspector Tony Jeurissen of Whakatane police said.
