Onehunga shooting investigation: Shotgun seized, charges laid a month after person wounded

Police have recovered a gun they suspect may have been involved in an Onehunga shooting that critically injured one person.

The Auckland City Organised Crime Unit have been working to identify a group of people involved in a January 16 shooting at an Arthur St property.

A person was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition after they were struck in the abdomen by a firearm the group discharged into the house.

Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Bunce confirmed police seized a shotgun and ammunition from a Māngere property on Friday but said they had not yet verified the weapon’s connection to the shooting.

“We have no tolerance for blatant violence involving firearms in our community,” he said.

“The public will appreciate we can’t share the details of the work ongoing, however we have a dedicated investigative team that is working to hold those involved to account for what happened that day.”

A 43-year-old man appeared in the Auckland District Court this weekend to face charges for unlawfully possessing the weapon.

Bunce said police are still seeking information from the public as inquiries continue.
