Neighbours heard the ute go over the bridge and rushed to the male driver, who was alone in the vehicle.
"We heard it happened, it went over with a heck of a bang," said a neighbour who did not want to be named. "He went over the bridge next to the train lines."
She said the drop was as high as a house and the man's car was extensively damaged, and landed 1.5m from the train line.
The woman's husband rushed to the man while she called 111.
"He was alive, but pretty dopey. They had to cut the roof off and the door off to get him out."
St John ambulance and Westpac Rescue Helicopter were at the scene until 8.30pm.
Train authorities had been notified.
