One person has died following a water-related incident on the Waimakariri River in Canterbury.

Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said emergency services were called to the scene about 4.30pm.

“Despite the efforts of emergency services, the person died at the scene,” he said.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
