One killed in Waikato crash

One person is dead and two seriously injured after a van carrying five people from Vanuatu rolled in the Waikato today.

The accident happened at Ngatea, 23km south west of Thames, about 8am, police said.

The van rolled while it was overtaking a vehicle on State Highway 2, a Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance spokesman said.

One person died at the scene and two others with serious injuries were taken to Thames hospital initially then flown to Waikato Hospital.

SH2 at the Bush Road intersection has been closed.
