One person was killed and two others were last night in hospital after a head-on crash north of Auckland.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 1, just north of Robertson Rd, Wellsford, about 6.30pm to find that one person died at the scene.
Northern ambulance spokesman Keith Hall saida woman in her 20s suffered serious injuries and was flown by Westpac helicopter to Auckland Hospital. Another person suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to North Shore Hospital.
Police said they could not give further details.
The accident happened near the Wellsford Golf Club just north of Dome Valley, a notorious spot for deadly crashes.
Police last night blocked off parts of State Highway 1 and put diversions in place. Long delays were expected for those travelling to Auckland from the Tonga versus Japan match in Whangarei.
The Transport Agency this week suspended all road works for one day on the section of State Highway 1 between Auckland and Whangarei for the match. Parts of the the highway have an 80km speed restriction in place.
