Margaret Bevis said Whareora Rd is a rural road and people tend to speed down it.
She said the road's 100km/h speed limit combined with the wet surface and mist could have contributed to the crash.
"It's this light drizzly rain and it's cold and windy.
"And of course the road being wet, you can skid."
From her house she saw people in fluoro vests were still on the scene, but an ambulance and fire engine had left after the crash.
Edward Guest, another resident on the road, said he'd heard of one or two crashes since he moved there 11 years ago but never involving more than one car.
"They usually go off rode with speed.
"They do speed quite a bit down there."
