Road and weather conditions at the time were good, and speed and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash, Mr Troy said.
"From an initial investigation the Ford vehicle has crossed to the incorrect side of the road into gravel before colliding with the truck.
"Police cannot emphasise enough the importance of not driving when tired and fatigued. Ensure you have enough sleep prior to your journey and if you feel tired stop and rest," he said.
The Taupo Serious Crash Unit was investigating the cause of the crash.
The Tokoroa man's name would be released once his family members had been advised.
