One dead in four-car crash

One person died and two were injured in a four-car collision on State Highway 5 at Waiotapu, 30km southeast of Rotorua, tonight.

Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips told NZPA that two fire appliances from Rotorua were in attendance.

One person was trapped in the wreckage, but Mr Phillips was unsure if that was the deceased person.

The highway was closed and traffic diversions were in place.
