One dead and at least two critical after serious two-car crash at Dome Valley

One person is dead and a number of others injured after a two-car crash on State Highway 1, north of Auckland.

The crash happened about 7pm and has closed State Highway 1 in the Dome Valley.

Police confirmed in a statement that one person had died and another sustained moderate injuries in the crash.

Northern Fire Service communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said a number of other people involved in the crash had suffered minor injuries.

Emergency services are currently at the scene.

Motorists are being asked to choose an alternate route or postpone travel as the crash scene is expected to close the road for some time and delays are likely.

Diversions are in place along Port Albert Rd, Kaipara Flats Rd and Wayby Valley Rd.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
