One person is dead after a car rolled into a drain beside a highway last night.
Another person was trapped in a car after the accident on State Highway 1 in Piarere, Waikato, just before 8.30pm.
An SUV travelling south rolled near the intersection of Tirau Rd and Horahora Rd, police said.
It landed upside-down in a drain.
One person was killed, and six were injured.The Fire Service sent three appliances to the crash scene at 8.23pm.
"A car rolled. On arrival...the vehicle was upside-down in a drain. One person was found to be deceased and one other person appeared to be trapped," a Northern Fire Communications shift manager said.
Firefighters extricated the trapped person from the SUV and handed them over to ambulance staff.
The accident happened in a rural farming area and night had already fallen. Firefighters helped the police Serious Crash Unit to set up lighting at the scene.
The injured people were taken to Waikato Hospital for treatment, police said. The Taupo serious crash unit was investigating the crash.
Meanwhile, police, ambulance and firefighters in West Auckland attended a car crash which happened at around 8.15pm. A car lost control and left Huia Rd, Waitakere.
One person suffered critical injuries and was trapped in the vehicle. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene, and the Fire Service worked to free the sole occupant.
A St John ambulance spokeswoman said three of the people rescued were seriously injured. The other three people had moderate injuries.
A Waikato Hospital spokeswoman understood some of those in the car were teenagers but an adult had been driving.
She said four of the accident victims were stable in a ward this afternoon and two had been discharged from hospital.
