One dead after car plunges into river

One person is dead and another was rescued after a car left the road and plunged into the Wairoa river south of Gisborne this morning.

A police central communications spokesman said the accident happened around 11.20am.

One injured occupant was rescued and taken to hospital while the body of a second was retrieved by police divers.

Emergency services were still at the scene.
