A 68-year-old woman died when the car she was a passenger in and another vehicle collided on State Highway 1 at Manakau, 85km north-east of Wellington, yesterday.
Constable Martin Krieger said Valerie Barnett, of nearby Ohau, died at the scene.
"It appears a south-bound vehicle was attempting toturn right into Gleeson Road when it collided with a northbound vehicle," Mr Krieger said.
"The vehicle was shunted off the road into a fence."
Ms Barnett was a front-seat passenger in the south-bound vehicle. The driver was flown to Palmerston North Hospital, while another passenger received only minor injuries.
A passenger in the northbound vehicle received minor to moderate injuries and was taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
Police wanted to hear from anyone who saw the crash.
