Ohakune crash victim named

The teenage girl killed in a central North Island car crash on Saturday night has been named.

She was 15-year-old Maylean Hira Henare from Raetihi.

A 43 year-old man is facing alcohol-related charges after the crash near Mt Ruapehu.

Police said the man lost control of his car and crashed into an embankment. Maylean died at the scene. Another 15 year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The man has been charged with refusing officers a request for blood, driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury and driving under the influence of alcohol causing death.

He is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court on August 19.

Police have said the cause of the crash is still under investigation and further charges have not been ruled out.
