Squash

It was a hectic time for the Masterton Squash Club when they hosted the Wellington open championships last weekend.

One hundred and twenty players were involved in a programme involving 11 grades, seven men's and five women's, and with some of the country's top exponents contesting the open sections, the standard of play was probably as high as has ever being seen in a tourney held in this part of the country.

The women's open title was won by world No5 Joelle King who scored a straight sets win over a plucky Danielle Fourie, while five times national champion Kashif Shuja beat New Zealand rep Evan Williams in a five-set men's open decider.

The men's open field also included New Zealand under-17 champion Scott Galloway of Wellington who has been selected to represent his country at the world junior championships next year. He was placed eighth overall.
