NZ journalism legend Gordon 'Flash' McBride dies

Veteran newsman Gordon 'Flash' McBride has died after a battle with cancer.

The former Wellington bureau chief for 3 News has been described by his peers as an "industry legend", "lover of life", "terrific boss" and "magnificent friend".

McBride began chemotherapy for the final stage of his prostate cancer in January according to Fairfax.

McBride was 17 when he began his career in newspaper, as a cadet at the Southland Times in 1968, before making the move to television at age 40.

During his time at the Southland Times, McBride was given the "hotels round" which had him checking guest lists, so that readers got the scoop on which celebrities were staying where and in whose company, Fairfax reported.

He also worked at the Christchurch Star in the 1980's.

McBride's friend and veteran journalist Colin Hogg has written a travel memoir recounting a southern road trip the pair took after McBride broke the news of his illness.

The journalist attended the Wellington Cup Day races for 30 years. Before what was his final time at the races this year, he told Fairfax that he planned to leave his emotions at the turnstiles for the day and make it about his mates and betting.
